Okay so I may have got you here under false pretences. But here is something that is overlooked by the average Twitter user – symbols.
The above case is an extreme one. But what it does highlight is the possible advantage that symbols within tweets can have.
Anyone who uses Twitter on a regular basis understands that reading tweets can become a bit repetitive and an over-learned activity.
An ‘overlearned’ activity is what psychologists call, “…something we are so well practised at that we are able to do it without much conscious thought”.
Barry Kantowitz, a psychologist at the University of Michigan said, “Once something becomes automated, it gets executed in a rapid string of events…”.
This means the constant stream of tweets that appear in your twitter feeds will be scanned very quickly and decisions made on whether to replay, comment or re-tweet will be executed without much thought.
This presents an interesting challenge for the digital marketer. How do you get your ‘interested’ party to sit up and take notice of your carefully crafted tweet?
Symbols in Tweets
I’m not suggesting that symbols with send your click-through rates soaring. But it is one element within a mashup of different ingredients that might make a successful tweet.
So here is a guide how best use your symboled tweets.
Test the symbol works
There is nothing worse than tweeting a comment that is a misspelling, a glaring error or simply wrong. Make sure you symbol works prior to going live.
Don’t over do it
Like everything balance and moderation is the key. Being creative is all about doing something once. But blasting your users with repeated messages with the same symbols will kill that edge.
Relevance
Try and introduce symbols that relate to the message you are trying to convey. There’s not an unlimited number of symbols available so don’t try and shoe-horn a symbol into any and all tweets.
Picking your symbol
Ok, so you’ve decided this sounds like a good idea. You then need to choose your symbol. There is a resource called Unicode Symbol Map. Twitter is compatible with Unicode symbols. Simply copy the symbol from the map and then paste into your tweet.
A simply Ctrl +C should do it.
Measure
If you are not measuring your marketing efforts already, you really should be.
As with all your marketing efforts you need to measure response rates to ascertain the effectiveness. Click-through rates and ROI are critical in measuring the success of your campaigns.
Throughout the coming months Key Multimedia will be testing this theory and reporting back.
